UK signs AI Treaty - But what does it mean?

On Thursday (5th September), the UK signed an international treaty to implement AI safeguards. It was signed by the EU, UK, US and Israel.

But what does this mean? Are the UK now bound by a legal treaty to tackle AI in a specific way? Well, it appears that we are.

The treaty was drawn up by the Council of Europe and the countries who signed must implement safeguards against any threats posed by AI to human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Within the treaty, it states that AI systems must comply with a set of principles including protection of personal data, safe development and non discrimination. Governments will introduce safeguards which will prevent systems from producing AI generated misinformation and decisions that are incorrect due to the nature of the data that is being used.

In the UK, the Government is reviewing if the content of the treaty is covered by existing legislation.

An AI bill is also believed to be coming, with potential plans for a consultation.
